The short answer
At our spa the average tip runs around 17 to 19 percent of the service price. Some guests tip more, some tip less, and plenty of factors move the number - the spa's location, what the checkout screen suggests, whether it was an ordinary Tuesday session or someone rescuing your shoulders before a wedding. Fifteen percent is a perfectly respectable tip. Twenty percent says the session was excellent. Nothing is required, and nobody on our team has ever chased a guest into the rain over a tip.
That's the whole answer. Everything below is the texture: why the number hovers where it does, what it looks like in actual dollars, how it works mechanically at checkout, and the handful of situations - couples bookings, gift cards, cash - where people genuinely aren't sure what the move is.
Is tipping expected at a massage spa?
In Canada, tipping at a spa follows restaurant logic: it's customary, it's genuinely appreciated, and it's never enforced. Massage is intensely skilled physical work - a therapist gives a dozen sessions a week their full strength and attention - and tips are a real part of how that work is recognised. When you tip, it reaches the people who took care of you.
But "customary" is not "mandatory," and the range is honestly wide. Visitors from countries where tipping isn't a thing sometimes don't tip at all; regulars sometimes tip the same flat amount every visit for years; someone having the best massage of their life occasionally taps 25 percent. All of these people are welcomed back with exactly the same warmth. If a spa ever makes you feel otherwise, that's a spa problem, not a you problem.
One quiet norm worth knowing: the percentage is usually figured on the service price before GST, and on the regular price rather than a discounted one - if a promotion took $30 off, the kind move is to tip on what the session would normally cost. Kind move, not rule.
What that looks like in dollars
Using our own Vancouver menu prices as the example:

Rounding to a clean number is completely normal - $20 on a $119 session, $60 on a couples booking. Nobody is doing long division on the way out, and GST is never charged on a tip.

How it works at checkout - and the special cases
On the card machine. At most modern spas, ours included, the payment terminal offers suggested percentages plus a custom amount - the whole decision takes four seconds and the suggestions are exactly where you'd expect them. This, honestly, is one reason tips have drifted from the old 15 toward 17-19 across the city: the middle button does a lot of quiet work. Press whichever one is true.
Paying online or with a saved card. Our online checkout includes the same tip options when you pay, so a fully prepaid visit can still carry one if you want it to.
Cash. Always welcome, handed to your therapist directly with a thank-you. Some guests pay the session by card and tip in cash on purpose; therapists notice, in the good way.
Couples bookings. Two of you means two therapists working simultaneously, so the tip is usually figured on the combined total and shared between them - the terminal handles the split. On a couples massage in Vancouver at $338, the table above applies as-is.
Gift cards and packages. If your visit was a gift or part of a prepaid package, tips work the usual way at the desk, figured on the menu value of the session. A gift card can also be put toward the tip itself if there's a balance left - the recipient decides.
