The Treatment

What is hot herbal compress massage?

Hot herbal compress massage — known in Thai as Luk Pra Kob — is one of Thailand's oldest wellness rituals. A blend of traditional Thai herbs including lemongrass, kaffir lime, turmeric, ginger, galangal, and camphor is packed tightly into muslin cloth, tied into a ball, and steamed to the ideal temperature before the session begins.

The compress is then applied to the body in a steady, rhythmic pattern — pressed and rolled across the muscles, lifting and reapplying in a measured tempo that has remained essentially unchanged for centuries. Between compress applications, the therapist works with their hands, so the session combines the warmth and aromatics of the compress with the pressure and precision of hands-on massage. The result is something that cannot be replicated by heat pads or hot stones alone: it is simultaneously a massage and a full aromatherapy experience.

At Leelawadee, the compresses are made fresh and steamed to order. The aromatic steam begins to fill the treatment room as soon as preparation starts, and it permeates the skin throughout the session. Guests who have tried standard massage and then experienced a herbal compress for the first time consistently describe it as something categorically different.

This treatment has been part of our menu since Leelawadee opened in 2005, and it remains one of the treatments our therapists are most proud to offer. If you want something that is genuinely, authentically Thai rather than a Western-influenced adaptation, this is that treatment.

Your Visit

What to expect

01

Before

Let your therapist know about any skin sensitivities, allergies, or areas you would like focused on. The herbal blend is prepared and steamed before your session begins — you may notice the scent as you arrive at the treatment room. Wear or bring comfortable clothing; the therapist will drape appropriately throughout.

02

During

The session opens with hands-on work to warm the muscles before the compress is introduced. Once the compress arrives, the therapist applies it in a steady rhythm — you will feel sustained warmth, the texture of the muslin cloth, and the release of aromatic steam with each press. The compress is alternated with hands-on massage throughout. The intensity of heat decreases naturally as the session progresses; tell your therapist at any point if the temperature needs adjusting.

03

After

The warmth from the compress typically stays with you for some time after the session. Skin may feel softer and more refreshed than after a standard massage, from the herbal steam. Most guests feel deeply settled rather than worked-over — this is a restorative, warming treatment rather than an intense one. Drink water, keep the rest of the day gentle, and allow the warmth to continue doing its work.

Why It Works

What you'll feel

Aromatic Botanicals

The herbal scent — lemongrass, kaffir lime, turmeric, ginger — is not incidental. It is an active part of the treatment, released by steam throughout the session and absorbed as the compress contacts the skin.

Penetrating Herbal Warmth

Traditional Thai herbs have been valued for their warming properties for centuries. The sustained heat of the compress reaches into muscle tissue in a way that hands alone cannot replicate.

Rhythmic Pressing

The compress is applied in a steady, measured rhythm — press, lift, move — that settles the nervous system and allows the body to gradually release held tension and stiffness.

Skin Nourishment

The herbal steam opens the pores and leaves skin feeling refreshed and soft. Many guests notice a visible warmth and glow to the skin in the hours after a session.

Is It Right for You?

Who books hot herbal compress

The hot herbal compress is one of our more distinctive offerings — it is not simply a variation on a standard massage. It suits certain guests particularly well:

Those seeking an authentic Thai ritual

Luk Pra Kob is one of Thailand's oldest wellness practices. If you want a treatment that is distinctly, unmistakably Thai rather than a Western adaptation, this is it.

People who want warmth, scent, and touch combined

This is the only treatment on our menu that engages all three simultaneously. The experience is multi-sensory in a way that standard massage cannot match.

Gift seekers looking for something genuinely special

The hot herbal compress is consistently the gift choice when someone wants to give an experience rather than just a massage — something the recipient will actually remember.

Guests who have tried standard massage and want something different

If you've had Swedish and deep tissue but never a herbal compress, this is the natural next step. Nothing else quite compares to the first time the warm compress meets the skin.

Common Questions

Hot herbal compress FAQ

Our compresses are made with a traditional Thai herbal blend: lemongrass, kaffir lime leaf and rind, turmeric, ginger, galangal, and camphor, all wrapped tightly in muslin cloth. The combination has been used in Thai wellness practice for hundreds of years. Each compress is freshly prepared and steamed before your session.

Let us know about any skin sensitivities or known allergies when you book. The herbal blend is natural, but individual plants can cause reactions in some people — particularly those with sensitivities to the ginger family or citrus. If you are unsure, please mention it at the start of your session so the therapist can adjust or substitute as needed.

The compresses are steamed to a temperature that feels deeply warming without being uncomfortable. Your therapist tests the temperature on their own skin before applying the compress to yours, and the intensity of heat naturally reduces as the session progresses. If it ever feels too warm, tell your therapist immediately — they will adjust the contact time or allow the compress to cool slightly.

The hot herbal compress session already involves hands-on work between compress applications, so it is a complete treatment in its own right. If you are interested in combining styles, speak to us when booking — we can sometimes accommodate a hybrid session depending on availability and session length. Our 90-minute option gives the most room to experience both the compress work and extended hands-on massage.

Our sessions are not performed by Registered Massage Therapists (RMT) and cannot be claimed through extended health benefits. If insurance coverage is important to you, please ask about RMT availability when booking.
