Deep Tissue Massage in Vancouver
Firm pressure, slow strokes, warm oil — reaching the layers that surface massage can't touch.
The Treatment
What is deep tissue massage?
Deep tissue massage uses firm, sustained pressure and slow, deliberate strokes to work through the surface muscle layers and into the deeper connective tissue beneath — the areas where tension accumulates and stays.
Most everyday stiffness sits in the fascia: the connective tissue that wraps muscle groups and gets progressively restricted when you sit in the same position all day, train hard without recovery, or carry tension in the same spots repeatedly. Standard relaxation massage works the surface. Deep tissue reaches the layers underneath.
At Leelawadee, deep tissue sessions use warm oil applied at the start of the session. This allows the therapist's hands to move with greater precision and maintain sustained contact without friction — a distinction from the dry-towel approach used at many other Vancouver massage studios. The result is a session that can work more deeply and continuously without interruption.
The pressure is firm and purposeful — you'll feel it working. But it's always calibrated to your body's response and your feedback throughout. Our therapists have been delivering deep tissue massage at our Downtown and Cambie locations since 2005.
Your Visit
What to expect
Before
Let your therapist know which areas you would like focused on — shoulders, lower back, legs, or wherever tension tends to accumulate. Sessions can be full-body or targeted to specific areas, depending on what you need.
During
Firm, slow strokes and sustained pressure work through muscle layers. You may feel intensity in areas of genuine tightness — this is normal and expected. It should never feel sharp. Communicate throughout; your therapist adjusts pressure continuously based on your response.
After
Some people feel mild muscle soreness for 24–48 hours afterwards — similar to how your body feels after a solid workout. Drink plenty of water. That initial heaviness typically gives way to noticeably looser, more mobile muscles within a day.
Why It Works
What you'll feel
Deep Tension Release
Works through restricted fascia and knotted muscle tissue that accumulate over time — in the shoulders, lower back, hips, and legs — leaving muscles feeling loose and mobile again.
Better Recovery
Firm, deliberate pressure helps muscles recover properly between training sessions, reducing the residual stiffness that builds up after intense physical activity.
Improved Mobility
Releases shortened, stiff muscles that restrict movement and pull the body out of its natural alignment — common in desk workers and anyone who sits for long periods.
Sustained Flexibility
Regular deep tissue sessions help maintain muscle suppleness and keep connective tissue mobile and responsive over time.
Is It Right for You?
Who books deep tissue massage
Deep tissue massage is not for everyone. If you prefer gentle pressure or are sensitive to firm touch, traditional Thai massage or Swedish massage may suit you better. Our regulars tend to fall into these categories:
Desk workers
Who carry constant tension in the shoulders, neck, and upper back from hours at a screen.
People who exercise regularly
And want their muscles to recover properly between sessions rather than accumulating tightness over weeks.
Anyone who has tried relaxation massage and wants more
People who need to feel it working — lighter-touch approaches haven't touched the underlying tension.
Those with long-held stiffness
In the hips, legs, or back that lighter pressure hasn't reached.

Common Questions
Deep tissue massage FAQ
Swedish massage uses lighter strokes for general relaxation and surface muscle tension. Deep tissue uses slow, firm pressure to work through accumulated muscle tension in the deeper layers of connective tissue. The goals and methods are quite different — Swedish for relaxation, deep tissue for releasing stubborn, built-up tension.
You'll feel firm pressure in areas of genuine tightness — that's the nature of deep tissue work. It should never feel sharp or intolerable. Communicate with your therapist and they'll adjust throughout. Most people find the intensity satisfying rather than unpleasant once they've experienced a session.
Warm oil allows the therapist to maintain sustained contact and move with greater precision without surface friction. This means the pressure work can be deeper and more continuous than a dry-towel approach — the therapist can focus entirely on the muscle layers without interruption.
For an active lifestyle or periods of high physical demand, every 2–4 weeks works well. For general upkeep, monthly sessions suit most people. If you have significant built-up tension, two sessions in the first month can make a noticeable difference.
Our deep tissue sessions are not performed by Registered Massage Therapists (RMT) and cannot be claimed through extended health benefits. If insurance coverage is important to you, please ask about our RMT availability when booking.
