Hot Stone Massage in Vancouver
Smooth volcanic basalt stones, warmed to the ideal temperature — heat that softens what pressure alone can't reach.
The Treatment
What is hot stone massage?
Hot stone massage uses smooth, flat volcanic basalt stones warmed to a carefully calibrated temperature. The stones are placed along the body's key energy points — the spine, shoulders, and legs — where they passively warm the underlying muscle tissue. The therapist then uses the heated stones as massage tools, delivering strokes with warmth built into every movement. The result is something quite different from what hands alone can produce.
Muscle tissue softens under sustained heat far more readily than under cold pressure. This is the principle that makes hot stone massage effective: rather than requiring firm manual pressure to work through tight tissue, the warmth does most of the softening work first. The therapist can then achieve depth with lighter touch — making the session accessible for people who find conventional deep pressure uncomfortable, while still delivering a thorough release of built-up stiffness.
At Leelawadee since 2005, hot stone massage has been one of our most consistently requested treatments. Our therapists combine the stone work with skilled manual technique throughout the session — the stones are not decorative. The heat and the hands work together, creating a session that addresses both the physical experience of muscle tension and the nervous system response that keeps the body in a state of low-level stress. Most clients describe it as one of the most deeply settling experiences the spa offers.
Your Visit
What to expect
Before
Let your therapist know if you have any areas of particular tension, if you tend to run cold or have circulatory concerns, or if you have any skin sensitivity. The session is performed on a massage table with the body properly draped throughout — undressing to your comfort level, as with any table massage.
During
Warm stones are placed on key areas of your back, along the spine, and between the toes as you settle. Your therapist then works methodically through the body, using both stones and hands. The warmth builds gradually — most people enter a deeply relaxed state within the first fifteen minutes and remain there for the duration of the session. Pressure is adjusted to your preference throughout.
After
Hot stone massage tends to produce a more profound sense of stillness than most other treatments. You may feel deeply calm and slightly floaty immediately afterwards — this is normal and welcome. The warmth often lingers in the body for an hour or more. Take your time getting up, drink water, and avoid rushing back into an intensive day if possible.
Why It Works
What you'll feel
Penetrating Warmth
Heat from warmed basalt stones reaches deep muscle layers far more readily than manual pressure alone — softening tissue quickly and allowing the body to let go of stiffness it has been holding for a long time.
Profound Relaxation
The combination of sustained warmth and rhythmic massage pressure produces a deeply settled state — guests consistently describe hot stone sessions as some of the most restorative experiences the spa offers.
Gentle but Effective
Because the heat does so much of the softening work, therapists can achieve depth without firm manual pressure. Hot stone massage is an excellent choice for people who find conventional pressure uncomfortable.
Warmth for Cold Extremities
The heat encourages vasodilation — blood vessels widen and circulation improves. This is particularly noticeable in the hands, feet, and lower legs for people who tend to run cold.
Is It Right for You?
Who books hot stone massage
Hot stone massage is not everyone's first choice — some people prefer the direct physical engagement of deep tissue or Thai technique. But for certain guests it is, without question, the best session we offer:
People who carry tension but prefer gentler pressure
Hot stone delivers depth through heat rather than force. You get the release without the intensity — ideal if deep tissue massage has ever felt like too much.
Those who feel stiffness in their muscles
Warmth softens muscle fibres more willingly than cold pressure ever can. If stiffness is your main complaint, the thermal element of hot stone makes a real difference to how completely the muscles release.
People who feel cold or have poor circulation in their extremities
The heat encourages circulation through the whole body. Many guests notice their hands and feet feel warmer and more alive after a hot stone session than after any other treatment.
Anyone wanting the most deeply relaxing session available
If your goal is to feel completely still and at ease for an hour or more, hot stone is consistently the treatment guests return to. The warmth settles the nervous system in a way that manual massage alone rarely matches.

Common Questions
Hot stone massage FAQ
The basalt stones are warmed to a carefully controlled temperature — warm enough to soften muscles effectively and produce the deep relaxation response the treatment is known for, but never uncomfortably hot. Your therapist will check the stone temperature before placing them and will monitor your comfort throughout the session. If at any point a stone feels too warm, let your therapist know immediately and they will adjust.
Hot stone massage is particularly well-suited to people who carry muscle tension but prefer gentler touch, those who feel stiffness or tightness regularly, people who tend to feel cold or have poor circulation in the hands and feet, and anyone who has not found conventional manual massage deeply relaxing enough. It is also a popular choice for guests who want an experience that is genuinely restorative rather than purely functional.
Swedish massage uses manual strokes and pressure from the therapist's hands — the warmth of the treatment comes primarily from skin contact and movement. Hot stone massage adds heated volcanic basalt stones as tools: placed on key areas of the body to warm the tissue passively, and used to deliver strokes with warmth built into every movement. The result is a session that softens muscle tissue more rapidly and produces a more deeply settled state of relaxation than Swedish technique alone typically achieves.
We do not recommend hot stone massage during pregnancy. The sustained heat and stone placement are not appropriate for prenatal clients. If you are pregnant and looking for a relaxing treatment, please contact us and we will suggest a more suitable option from our menu.
