Traditional Thai Massage in Vancouver
2,500 years of tradition — fully clothed, no table, no oils. Practised at Leelawadee since 2005.
The Practice
What is traditional Thai massage?
Traditional Thai massage — known in Thailand as Nuad Thai — is a full-body wellness practice that combines rhythmic acupressure, assisted yoga-like stretching, and energy line work into a single, continuous sequence. Unlike Swedish or deep tissue massage, you remain fully clothed throughout. No oils, no undressing, no lying passively on a table.
Your therapist uses their hands, thumbs, forearms, elbows, knees and feet to apply firm pressure along the body's energy pathways — called Sen lines in Thai medicine — while guiding you through a series of assisted stretches that progressively open the hips, spine, shoulders and legs.
The result is something people often describe as feeling like a deep massage and a yoga class at the same time: you leave more mobile, more grounded, and noticeably lighter than when you arrived.
The tradition has been practised in Thailand for over 2,500 years and is formally recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. At Leelawadee, our approach draws directly from the northern Thai tradition, following the lineage taught at the WATPO Thai Traditional Medical School in Bangkok — the institution where our founder trained and was certified before opening Leelawadee in Vancouver in 2005.
Your Visit
What to expect in your session
Before
Wear comfortable, loose clothing — yoga pants, sweatpants and a t-shirt. Anything that allows a full range of movement. Avoid a heavy meal for at least an hour before. We provide clothing if needed.
During
You'll lie on a padded floor mat in a quiet, private room. Your therapist begins at your feet — a gesture rooted in Thai tradition — and works progressively through the body: calves, thighs, hips, back, shoulders, arms, neck. Throughout, you'll be guided through passive stretches. Your therapist does the work; you breathe and let go.
After
Take your time. We serve ginger tea at the end of every session. Drink water through the rest of your day. Many clients feel simultaneously relaxed and energised — improved flexibility, reduced tension, and a calm mind are commonly reported for days afterward.
Why It Works
What Thai massage does for you
Over 21 years in Vancouver, here is what traditional Thai massage consistently delivers for our clients.
Release of Back and Neck Tension
Thai massage works down the full length of the spine and across the shoulders, using sustained acupressure and assisted extension to release the tension that accumulates between the shoulder blades and along the base of the neck.
Improved Flexibility and Range of Motion
The assisted stretches in Thai massage take joints through ranges of motion most people have not accessed in years. After a session, hip flexors open, hamstrings lengthen, and the spine decompresses noticeably.
Stress Release and Mental Clarity
The rhythmic pressure of Thai massage settles the nervous system and quiets a busy mind. The sense of calm and clarity that follows a 90-minute session is qualitatively different from other forms of relaxation.
Head and Neck Tension Release
Pressure applied along the neck, scalp and shoulder girdle — a core part of Thai technique — is one of the most consistently reported benefits by our clients. Those who carry tension in their upper body notice this most.
Increased Energy and Circulation
Thai massage works through the body's compression and release mechanics to improve circulation and restore vitality. The energy lift clients describe after a session is specifically by design — the practice works to unblock life energy along the Sen lines.
Better Sleep
The combination of physical release and nervous system settling means many clients sleep more deeply after a Thai massage session. Regular sessions are one of the most effective natural tools for improving sleep quality.
Booking
How long should your session be?
This is the question we get most often from first-timers.
60 minutes
Enough to feel the difference — but the work is concentrated. Good for a maintenance session when you know your body and have specific areas to address.
90 minutes
RecommendedAllows your therapist to work the whole body properly, including the stretching sequences that shorter sessions have to cut short. This is where the full benefit of traditional Thai massage reveals itself.
120 minutes
The closest to how Thai massage is traditionally practised in Thailand — longer, slower, deeper. If you have significant tension built up or simply want the most complete experience, this is the session to book.

Common Questions
Thai massage FAQ
Swedish massage uses oil on bare skin and focuses on relaxing specific muscle groups through kneading and long strokes. Traditional Thai massage is performed fully clothed on a floor mat, and works the whole body through acupressure and assisted stretching along energy pathways. Thai massage is more active and whole-body; Swedish is more localised and passive.
No. You remain fully clothed throughout. Wear loose, comfortable clothing — yoga pants, sweatpants and a t-shirt work well. We can provide clothing if needed.
It's firm. The pressure is deeper than a relaxation massage, and the stretches can be intense in areas where you carry tension. But it should never feel sharp or harmful. Your therapist will check in, and pressure is fully adjustable at any point. Most people find the intensity satisfying rather than uncomfortable.
90 minutes is what we recommend for first-timers. It allows your therapist to work the whole body properly, including the stretching sequences that shorter sessions have to cut short. This is where the full benefit of traditional Thai massage reveals itself.
For general wellness, every 2–4 weeks. During periods of high physical demand or accumulated stress, weekly sessions for the first month work well before transitioning to a maintenance rhythm. Many of our clients have been coming every two weeks for years.
Our traditional Thai massage sessions are not performed by Registered Massage Therapists (RMT) and cannot be claimed through extended health benefits. If insurance coverage is important to you, please ask us about RMT availability when booking.
Traditional Thai massage is not recommended during pregnancy. Please let us know when booking so we can advise on alternative options.
