Thai Massage vs Deep Tissue Massage in Vancouver: What's the Difference?

By Leelawadee Thai Spa · 7 min read

Traditional Thai massage and deep tissue massage are two of the most popular choices at Leelawadee — and the most common question we hear from people booking for the first time is: which one should I get?

The honest answer is that they're genuinely different experiences. Different techniques, different positions, different purposes. One uses oil on a table; the other uses no oil on a floor mat. One is passive and meditative; the other is active and sometimes intense. Understanding how they differ is the clearest way to know which suits you — and what you're actually looking for from your session.

This guide breaks down both treatments clearly, including a head-to-head comparison and a quick three-question framework for deciding between them.

What is traditional Thai massage?

Traditional Thai massage — sometimes called Thai yoga massage — is a dry bodywork practice rooted in Thai traditional medicine. Sessions are performed on a padded floor mat, with the client fully clothed in loose, comfortable clothing. No oil is used.

The therapist guides the body through a series of assisted stretches, similar in range of motion to yoga postures, while applying rhythmic acupressure along the body's sen lines — the energy pathways recognised in Thai traditional medicine. The therapist uses their hands, thumbs, elbows, knees, and feet throughout the session.

The result is something quite unlike other massage styles: a combination of compression, mobilisation, and deep stretching that leaves the body feeling open, light, and mobile. Many people describe it as having their body worked with rather than worked on.

At Leelawadee, our therapists trained at Wat Pho Thai Traditional Medical School in Bangkok — the school founded at the temple where traditional Thai massage was codified. Sessions are available in 60, 90, and 120-minute durations at both our Downtown Howe Street and Cambie Village locations.

What is deep tissue massage?

Deep tissue massage uses firm, sustained pressure applied with warm oil on a massage table. The client undresses to their comfort level and is draped throughout the session. The technique focuses on the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue — particularly the fascia, which surrounds and connects muscle groups and is where most accumulated tension lives.

Where Swedish massage uses lighter strokes across the surface, deep tissue moves slowly and deliberately through the upper muscle layers to reach the structures underneath. Therapists use sustained compression, slow cross-fibre strokes, and direct pressure to release areas of genuine restriction.

At Leelawadee, deep tissue sessions use warm oil from the start of the session. This allows the therapist to maintain sustained contact and work with precision — a distinction from the dry-towel approach used at many other Vancouver studios, which can interrupt the continuity of the work.

Deep tissue is particularly effective for people who carry persistent tension in the shoulders, upper back, lower back, or legs — and for those who feel that lighter massage approaches haven't reached the underlying tightness.

Who should choose Thai massage?

Traditional Thai massage tends to suit people who:

  • Prefer not to undress for a massage and want to stay clothed throughout
  • Are looking for improved mobility and a feeling of openness rather than pure pressure work
  • Have areas of stiffness that seem to come from how the body holds itself, rather than deeply knotted muscle
  • Have never had a massage before and want a gentler introduction to bodywork
  • Enjoy yoga or stretching and want a more guided, assisted version of that experience
  • Want a session that leaves them feeling energised and clear rather than sleepy

Who should choose deep tissue?

Deep tissue massage tends to suit people who:

  • Carry persistent tension in the shoulders, neck, lower back, or legs that other massage styles haven't reached
  • Exercise regularly and want their muscles to recover properly rather than accumulating progressive restriction
  • Sit at a desk for long hours and feel tightness that has built up over weeks or months
  • Have tried relaxation massage and found it pleasant but not impactful enough
  • Are comfortable with firm pressure and understand that intensity in areas of tightness is expected
  • Want the warmth and glide of oil-based work combined with serious depth of pressure

"Thai massage opens the body. Deep tissue reaches inside it. Both are effective — the question is what you're carrying."

Can you combine them?

Yes — and at Leelawadee, we offer a treatment specifically designed to do exactly that. Thai Flow massage integrates traditional Thai stretching and acupressure with elements of oil-based deep tissue work, creating a single session that covers both the mobility benefits of Thai massage and the depth of pressure that deep tissue delivers.

Thai Flow is a good option for people who've tried both styles separately and want the benefits of each, or for those who aren't sure which they prefer and want a hybrid introduction to both.

How to decide: three questions

If you're still unsure, answer these three questions:

1. Do you want to stay clothed?

If yes — Thai massage. Sessions are fully clothed, no oil, floor mat. If you're comfortable undressing and prefer oil-based work on a table, deep tissue is the natural choice.

2. Are you looking for active stretching?

If you want your body guided through movement — limbs lifted, joints mobilised, a sense of your body being opened — Thai massage is what you're describing. If you want sustained pressure into specific tight areas without movement, deep tissue is the fit.

3. How sensitive are you to firm pressure?

Thai massage can be firm in places, but it's not heavy-pressure work. Deep tissue is deliberately intense in areas of restriction. If you know you're sensitive to pressure, Thai massage is likely a more comfortable starting point. If you've had massage before and found it too light, deep tissue will give you what lighter styles couldn't.
